Artist Statement
I am fascinated by the color, light patterns, and variety found in nature–particularly with respect to water lilies. One can spend a life time and never come close to capturing the beauty and tranquility found in the natural world. I feel blessed to have the time to look so deeply into the life around me and hope to share that feeling with you through my paintings.

I joined the US Army in 1967 and while stationed in Korea I started painting during the evenings and on weekends as a way to pass the time.  Most of the paintings were detailed studies of the Disney animated features.  It was after I got out of the army that I became fascinated by the paintings of Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, and Whistler.

While living in Washington DC, I spent most weekends painting out in the Maryland and Virginia countryside.  I would drive along small sometimes dirt roads until I came across the subject of my next painting.  Parking my car on the side of the road, I placed my canvas flat on the hood of my car and began painting.

Soon after that period I was married and had two daughters. I realized that I needed to find a more reliable career which led to my working as a creative product and package designer for Johnson & Johnson, and then, 15 years later, with The Walt Disney Company as a Product Design Manager.  Working for Disney was a dream come true for me, something I had wanted to do ever since since I was five years old.  During my years with Disney I worked on many exciting projects and can look back fondly on my time with Disney.

My paintings cover a broad range of styles and techniques, with my preferred medium being oil on heavy watercolor paper.  Using paper rather than traditional canvas allows the paint to set and dry quicker, allowing for a faster painting and for paint 'drag' to occur.  Brush strokes become more visible which is an important element in most of my paintings.  After the painting is dry and varnished, I mount the painting on cradled birch plywood.

My artwork has been exhibited in galleries and art museums in Florida, Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey. And I continue to do character paintings for The Walt Disney Company.

Le Aly di Lia di Donatella Marraoni

Le Aly di Lia di Donatella Marraoni

Donatella Marraoni began her magnificent journey into the world of art in ’95, when she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia, Italy graduating in 1998 with first class honors. In this same year she relocated to England where she lived for 5 years.

She hence began to exhibit in Italy and abroad in prestigious private galleries and public places, immediately receiving important awards and the consensus of specialized critics. In March 2014 she received an award from the Director of the Gallery Selenograd in Russia and began to exhibit and sell her works worldwide.

In her paintings, the woman is the central subject: protagonist in scenes of love, awaiting, passion, pain, abandonment, desire, perversion. Donatella defines her works born out of chaos, confusion and characterized by strong lines, quick, unfinished, scratchy. The artist wants to evoke emotions, narrate situations and tell life stories using different means of communication and extremely varied between them such as oil, ink, pigments, glass, cement and coffee. “Her women” talk about love and men … first of all of her father who enrolled her at the Academy and now, although he is no longer, he fully participates in her creations being her memories fixed on canvas by the use of cement. Her father… a mason… a man… the first whom understood, her first true supporter. To him, the works “letters of coffee” are dedicated where the artist tells of herself and intimately opens to him. Her first exhibition dates back to 1997 and since then until today numerous personal and collective exhibitions have followed in galleries and museums in Italy and abroad.

Welcome and thank you for visiting!

In case you are interested in acquiring ORIGINAL PAINTINGS, PLEASE GO TO MY Etsy Store at: https://www.etsy.com/shop/GabiNiegelhell. In some cases the originals may even be acquired at a lower cost than a print on this site.

I was born in Austria (Europe) and spent the first 27 years of my life there. Adventure brought me to the USA. Here in New Mexico, the land of the light, I met my husband and had my two children. From very early on, I had a love for painting, drawing, photography, and pottery and I have been creating art in one form or another all my life. Creating is my true passion and purpose - it is what gets me up in the morning. I am mostly self-taught, but also attended art classes in Austria and in the US.

All the world around and inside me provide me with unlimited inspiration. As my eyes look into this world and see all the beautiful things, my head just cannot stop creating multitudes of images that my heart and my hands want to put down on canvas or paper. With this wealth of ideas, the body of my work ends up being rather versatile, as opposed to having only one subject matter, style, or approach. I primarily paint in oil on stretched canvas however. Calm and serene landscapes and still life’s are a constant. In painting these, I gravitate between abstracted realism and contemporary impressionism. I am particularly fascinated by how minuscule changes in light and dark and color temperature affect a painting and explore these in my work. I am also interested in the limitless possibilities of color, light, and shadow itself as a subject matter and occasionally explore abstract paintings.

I believe in the idea that art pertains to the heart before the mind. And so I hope to create artwork that not only tells a story of my own, but uncovers its own special meaning to the viewer and their inner world. If I can connect you with your inner world to an intense emotional experience, then that is what makes my work meaningful.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Gabi
