In the late 1970s, when I was in my early 20s, I was pursuing a songwriting career. I had a five song contract with a publisher in Toronto and was led to believe I would also be signed a recording artist.
Upon crossing the border I was told I could not transport my cheap PA system into Canada unless I left a $1,000 deposit (my sound system cost less than that!). So I rented a cheap motel room on Grand Island near Niagara Falls to hold my sound system for one week.
When I arrived at the record company in Toronto I got the grand tour of their incredible recording studios and received the “red carpet treatment.”
Then the ‘bomb’ was dropped. The record company had been sold and I was no longer going to be signed as a recording artist. With my dreams kicked out from under me, I drove back to my little motel room on Grand Island.
The next morning I drove to Niagara Falls. It was cold, I felt defeated, and yet the promise of a new day lay before me. This painting expresses that moment.
